The state of Rajasthan is perhaps the best example of the water scarcity issue that India faces. The intervention of Cairn, Oil & Gas vertical of Vedanta Limited to provide safe drinking water to the community focuses on the Barmer district, part of the Thar desert, which is said to be the most densely populated arid zone in the world with a population density of ~90 people per square km. Temperature reaches to more than 50 degree Celcius during summer with an annual average rainfall of ~200mm; ground water is saline and unsuitable for drinking or agriculture. The high TDS, nitrate and fluoride content in water lead to the incidence of dysentery, fluorosis, ‘blue baby’ syndrome etc, in turn leading to high Infant and Maternal Mortality Rates (IMR, MMR).
Accordingly, Cairn initiated the 'Jeevan Amrit' project in collaboration with the PHED, Govt of Rajasthan, to ensure safe drinking water to the communities in the districts of Barmer and Jalore through the establishment of Reverse Osmosis (RO) facilities. We currently operate 131 RO plants in states of Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, which have a best-in-class utilization.
